Running reads

As a teacher, I constantly lecture my class about the importance of reading. Until recently, I was completely engulfed by technology. My day was often as follows:

Wake Up – Check Phone – Get ready – Check Phone – Drive to work – Check Phone – Get to work – Check Phone… I think you get the idea.

GET OFF MY PHONE. I seriously needed to stop mindlessly checking my phone. Endless phone checking resulted in time wasted. Time spent ignoring those close to me. Time spent looking down, oblivious to the world around me. Time spent constantly comparing my life to others. It was time. Time for me to ditch the phone, follow my own advice and pick up a book. To begin with, this certainly didn’t come easy. I genuinely started to feel sorry for a book which was neglected on my bedside table for months on end.

My students acted as the real inspiration here and gave me the boost I needed.

Excitement filled my veins… It was the last day of term. A pupil approached me with happiness in their eyes as they passed me a gift. They were so keen for me to open it so, without hesitation, I ripped it open.  I was given a book called ‘The Way of the Runner’ by Adharanand Finn. I probably bored them to death with my running chat and this was the only way to shut me up! That moment, I made a promise. A promise that I’d read and review it, ready for the new term in September. This was the inspiration I needed to ditch technology and reignite a passion for reading. 

I am so thankful for that moment as, since then, I’ve stuck to my goal of reading more. Below is a collection of some books I’ve read, or listened to, recently. I enjoyed them all and each book has inspired my running and/or my overall mindset to life.


The Way of the Runner by Adharanand Finn. To be honest, I’d only recommend this to fellow runners! The book provides an interesting overview of the Japanese running world, describing the pros and cons of their training techniques. I now have my mind set on visiting Japan. Maybe 2020 for the Olympics?

Running with the Kenyans by Adharanand Finn. This is my favourite of the two. A fantastic insight into the success of Kenyan running, providing an overview of living conditions, training and ‘diets’. It’s incredible to read about the simple lives of such successful athletes. Again, I’d love the chance to visit Kenya!


Jog On by Bella Mackie. An open, honest account detailing Bella’s battles with mental health. She has used running as a coping mechanism for her anxiety. It is truly inspirational and can also provide advice to those  going through similar challenges. It’s very eye opening and I’d recommend this to all.

Up by Ben Fogle. It took me a while to get into this but, overall, an inspirational tale of Ben Fogle’s journey to the Everest Summit. At times, it gives such an uplifting view on life and felt like a breath of fresh air. He promotes a real ‘can do’ attitude. I certainly finished the book encouraged to look up and appreciate the world around me more.


First Man In by Ant Middleton. It’s not for everyone but I found it a very addictive read. Ant Middleton, former soldier, discusses his challenges, personal struggles and achievements. It contains some valuable life lessons, with various tips to combat your personal demons.

This is Going to Hurt by Adam Kay. Wow. I was speechless for most of this. An intriguing, funny, yet incredibly shocking account detailing the life of a Junior Doctor. I have true admiration for the NHS and those that work within it, even more so after hearing about it’s pressures and daily struggles.

Side note: Audio books can be great to listen to while running. If it’s engaging enough, you’ll completely forget about your running and you won’t want to stop!

  1. Some excellent recommendations there. Of your list, I’ve only read the Ant Middleton book (and went to see him on his tour last year). I would recommend Eat & Run by ultrarunner Scott Jurek and also Born to Run by Christopher McDougall.
