Run Teach Run Repeat

  • Step 1: Lay my clothes out ready.
  • Step 2: Set an early alarm.
  • Step 3: Wake up. Snooze Alarm.
  • Step 4: Rush out of bed. Rush to work.
  • Step 5: No dramas. Plan to run in the evening instead.
  • Step 6: Teach. Mark books. Probably eat cake.
  • Step 7: Tired. Go to bed.
  • Step 8: Moan about doing no exercise – probably due to having ‘no time’.

This was the standard routine, until I slowly but surely changed my habits. My routine nowadays is more like this:

Run. Teach. Gym. Sleep, or… Run. Teach. Run. Sleep

Most of my days now involve a run, or a gym session. I’ve formed a habit. Running is a key part of my day. My day feels strange, in a good way, without one or the other.

This change didn’t happen overnight. It took months and plenty of strategies.

To begin with, I changed my alarm to a Coldplay remix. The remix was terrible but it certainly got me out of bed. I then started leaving my trainers by the bedroom door, in the hope that would it would encourage me to run. Did it? Well… I left my trainers out ready for weeks on end. Every morning, I’d wake up later than anticipated and walk straight past them. Then, I started leaving my running clothes, next to my trainers, in the hope that would encourage me even more. Eventually, I was so sick of ignoring them that I plucked up the energy to go for a run. Nothing major…20 minutes, but 20 minutes more than nothing and probably the most effective run I have ever completed. It was the trigger for my healthy obsession of running.

For me, running is now a remedy. A habit. Something I can’t go without. After an exhausting day at work, the thought of running often seems horrendous but I’ve learnt to turn this into a positive. I imagine the feeling after. The positive endorphins. The clear head-space. The post-run ‘relaxation’. There is honestly nothing better. Running is time where I work on myself and make myself feel better.

  • Setting goals – small, achievable.
